Not trying to put anyone down here- but if you store whole wheat and don't eat lots of it in daily life you're in for tummy troubles at a time when a normally mild inconvenience can become a HUGE problem. Store what you use. Just buy BULK and store large amounts using mylar/buckets and restaurant size cans. Then purchase a foodsaver so that when you crack one of these large containers you can vacuum seal what's left.
Fwiw my staples are rice, pasta, potato dehy... with other things like pancake mix, granola mixes, soup mixes containing dried vegs... Then the cans start off with the intent of making your staples livable. Pasta sauce, cheese sauce, boullion and flavorings for the rice- go from there. Large cans of fruit and vegs would be a good next step... Powdered eggs and milk would help, too. If you are gonna store grain and the like then try using it beforehand to see how that works. All JMO. |
Re: Food prep recomendations
Keep track of what you eat for a month.....I mean a GOOD track.....as in write down every single thing that gets consumed in your household. Add in stuff for when you eat out to compensate for that.
Now that you have a month's worth, you can multiply by 12. The simple answer is "stock that".......only is isn't so simple, since you will likely find much of it is fresh or frozen. Now you have to learn what you can substitute for that.....like powdered milk for fresh, dried or canned meats for frozen and so on. But learning what you eat NOW will give you a good starting place to go from. Start there. |

Thanks, Tech. Great info.
Once on the road to food storage machismo it may be a good time to start thinking water storage. Lack of water will getcha quick. You shouldn't even eat when water isn't available (so I hear). I've seen some good ideas come and go- I'll see if I can find a link or 2. http://www.newdavincis.com/waterbobe...rve-p-275.html This one may be overkill: http://cgi.ebay.ca/3-000-GALLON-PORT...2em118Q2el1247 These assume you have some warning of an emergency- with enough time to fill the tank. Collapsible is nice as it folds away when not in use. |

How long does glass-bottled peanut butter last?
What about cooking yeast? Also, I read recently that oxygen absorbers shouldn't be used with sugar. Anyone know why? Are there other foods that don't mix well with absorbers? |
Re: Food prep recomendations
Peanut Butter is dated and generally lasts 3-5 years depending on brand and preservatives.
Yeast doesn't make it past 2 years or so depending on storage conditions. The LDS paper covers these 2 topics; also both products will be dated on the packaging. To the OP: Begin with water; all the food in the world is useless without fresh water. |
